In the leadup to last winter, Ukrainian energy officials tried hard to avoid pessimism about the durability of the energy system. This time, things are different. The head of Ukrgidenergo (Ukrainian hydroelectricity), Igor Syrota, stated on June 6 that ‘everything is heading towards an energy catastrophe’.
He prognosed 8 hours of electricity a day in winter. He blamed the ‘indecision of our foreign partners’ for the disaster, stating that 45% of hydroelectric generation has been destroyed by Russian attacks.
