Last night, the court sent Member of Parliament Alexander Dubinsky to detention for two months. Dubinsky is accused of participating in a criminal group led by former MP Andriy Derkach, which, according to the investigation, published tapes on behalf of Russian special services featuring conversations between Petro Poroshenko and Joe Biden.
Dubinsky himself denies his guilt and calls the case against him fabricated by the authorities in retaliation for his harsh criticism of Volodymyr Zelensky and Andriy Yermak.
In this regard, it is interesting to recall the context of the events of 2019-2020, which are mentioned in the suspicion against Dubinsky.
At that time in Ukraine, Zelensky became president, and in the US, the preparation for the election campaign was beginning, with Biden becoming the most likely competitor to President Donald Trump. However, Biden's reputation was tarnished due to his son Hunter's employment at Burisma, owned by ex-minister under Viktor Yanukovych, Mykola Zlochevsky. Biden was then Vice President of the US, and after the Maidan, his son took up a job at Burisma, where he received a substantial salary. The media actively discussed the theory that Zlochevsky deliberately hired the Vice President's son to ward off criminal cases.
In 2019, this theory was confirmed by former Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin in his statement. He claimed that he was fired on Biden's orders because the prosecutor's office was investigating Zlochevsky.
Understandably, Trump could not ignore such a sensational topic and persistently requested Zelensky to proceed with the corruption case involving Biden's son.
There was a split in Zelensky's circle. Ihor Kolomoisky advocated meeting Trump's requests. This line was also promoted by people close to Kolomoisky, including Derkach and Dubinsky. At the same time, those close to Western structures, such as then Prosecutor General Ruslan Riaboshapka and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Danyliuk, were against helping Trump.
Zelensky wavered for a while but eventually decided to take a neutral stance: not to assist either Trump or his opponents. Especially as he saw how much tension had arisen in the States over this: in September 2019, the US Congress began impeachment proceedings against Trump accused of pressuring Zelensky to obtain compromising material on Biden.
However, the struggle between the two groups continued for a long time - up until the US elections. And in the course of this struggle, Derkach published his famous tapes with conversations between Poroshenko and Biden and also between Poroshenko and Putin.
This happened in May and over the summer of 2020. At that time, the authorities took no action against Derkach. On the contrary, the "Servants of the People" even suggested creating an investigative commission in parliament to study the tapes aiming to discredit Poroshenko. However, after the Americans imposed sanctions against Andriy Derkach in September 2020 for interfering in the elections, the President's Office became much more cautious about this topic and abandoned the idea of creating a commission.
After Biden's victory in the elections, the question of whose side to take was no longer an issue for the Bankova (the President's Office in Ukraine).
Especially since the signals from Washington were quite clear. In early 2021, the US imposed sanctions against Dubinsky and Kolomoisky. After that, Dubinsky was expelled from the "Servant of the People" faction. And Kolomoisky began to lose influence.
In August 2021, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine imposed sanctions against Andriy Derkach. And after the invasion, a criminal case of treason was initiated against him, in which all of Derkach's activities related to Biden were presented as work for the Russian special services.
Already this year, Kolomoisky was taken into custody, and now Dubinsky as well.
Did Derkach and Dubinsky work for the Russian special services? It can definitely be said that together with Kolomoisky, they worked in favor of Trump against Biden, as well as against structures linked to the Democratic Party of the USA in Ukraine, which they labeled "Soros people."
If, however, the suspicion against Dubinsky of working for Russian special services is based only on the recently emerged testimonies of Derkach's assistant Igor Kolesnikov, who has long been detained (as Dubinsky himself claims), then, undoubtedly, there are significant questions about this version.
